New Union Gas pipeline in Hamilton, Ontario

Construction is set to start for a new Union Gas 20-kilometre, 48”-diameter natural gas pipeline that will run from a valve site near Hwy. 6 and Carlisle Road, to Milton, near Derry Road and Regional Road 25, in Hamilton, Ontario.

The new steel pipeline will be installed along the existing Hamilton-Milton natural gas pipeline corridor, which already contains three lines: a 26” line installed in 1957-58, a 34” line installed in 1970 and a 48” line installed in 2006.

According to Union Gas spokesperson, Andrea Stass, the new line is meant to help Union Gas service increased demand for natural gas. “That pipeline, essentially it moves gas throughout Ontario,” she said. “Community within Ontario use the gas, but it also serves Eastern Canada, Quebec and markets further beyond.

Stass noted the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) approved the construction of the new line in April of 2015. Union Gas held community information sessions about the project in Carlisle and Milton in April 2014, and applied to the OEB in September of 2014.
